Hep Free PA Coalition

Hep Free PA is a statewide coalition dedicated to improving the continuum of viral hepatitis prevention, diagnosis, care, and treatment with the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis and its related stigma from Pennsylvania. As a coalition, we strive to elevate individuals and communities that are disproportionately impacted by viral hepatitis, have reduced access to healthcare, and/or face stigma and discrimination based on their hepatitis infection, gender or sexual identity, risk behaviors, race, or ethnicity. We also strive to create a coalition community and safe space based on respect for all members.

Knowledge is Power

What is Hepatitis

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. The liver is a vital organ that processes nutrients, filters the blood, and fights infections. When the liver is inflamed or damaged, its function can be affected. Heavy alcohol use, toxins, some medications, and certain medical conditions can cause hepatitis. However, hepatitis is often caused by a virus. In the United States, the most common types of viral hepatitis are Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis D.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver. It is typically spread through contaminated food or water and can be prevented through vaccination.
Hep A

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver and can lead to serious health problems, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. It is primarily spread through contact with infected blood or other body fluids and can be prevented through vaccination.
Hep B

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that affects the liver and can lead to serious health problems, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. It is primarily spread through contact with infected blood and can be treated with antiviral medications, but is not preventable through vaccination.
Hep C

Hepatitis D

Hepatitis D, also known as delta hepatitis, is a viral infection that affects the liver and occurs only in individuals who are already infected with the hepatitis B virus. It is primarily spread through contact with infected blood and can cause more severe liver damage than hepatitis B alone.
